WHY GOAL SETTING HELPS ME

I suffer from depression and anxiety. I know for me this particular time of year that I always drop. I see everyone going outside and doing more because it’s summer enjoying their time, and I often beat myself up because I am not doing as much or my depression leaves me too tired to really enjoy the summer.

Often this leads to a massive drop in motivation and I do a lot less. I have lots of things I want to do but I just can’t find the get-up and go to do them.

I have however found that goal setting helps motivate me. You have to find things you really want to achieve and will be motivated to do and take little steps towards them.

To do this it is worth thinking about the top 5 values you have in your life. This may be things like achievement, family, health e.t.c. You can then come up with some short, long and mid term goals in these areas.

Each goal can be broken down into little more manageable steps and this helps me work towards something bigger and helps me feel like I am making progress towards the things I want to achieve in my life.

I have attached the FREE PDF I have created to help me set out and manage my goals. It works along side the SMART goals principle. The idea that for you to achieve a goal it must be SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ATTAINABLE, REALISTIC AND TIME ORIENTATED.

  • The main goal column provides space for you to set a general goal.
  • The 2nd column allows you to specify exactly what you will need to do to achieve that goal and helps you break it into achievable realistic steps.
  • The 3rd column allows you to set a realistic time frame. One that applies some pressure to get the action step done, but not too much that it becomes un achievable.
  • The 4th column helps you visualize what your situation will look like when you have achieved the action step. It has been proven that visualization and seeing yourself achieve a goal can actually help with motivation and your ability to reach it. This column also provides you with a measurable outcome so you know when you have achieved your action step.
  • Finally review your goal setting planner regularly and mark off when you have achieved different action steps. Marking things off is satisfying and motivates you to do more!

HOW OFTEN DO YOU NEED TO REVIEW AND CREATE NEW GOAL SHEETS?

Your short term goals planning sheet should be reviewed regularly as you near achieving your main goals.

Your mid-term goals should be reviewed every 6 months

And the progress you are making towards your long term goals should be reviewed every year.

It’s finally summer, and with that comes a lot of free time. But how to efficiently use this time without staring at the walls for days?

1. Read!

Books are probably one of the best ways to spend you free time. You get to enjoy an amazing piece of literature, and passively your brain remembers some new words or phrases. Bonus points if you read it in your second or third language.

2. Write

Whether it’s a journal, a novella, or a fictional story, let the words flow. You’ll find so many inspiration from the places around you and expand your horizons. And if you out enough effort into what you write, you might even get it published! How awesome would be that?

3. Find a new hobby

This one might sound easy, but let’s put a twist onto it. Try something totally out of your comfort zone, or something you’d never imagine doing. Whether it be painting, drawing, sewing, or photography – go and explore! Who knows what this world has to offer?

4. Take a walk

This again sounds kind of obvious, but I want you to take a few things into consideration when taking a walk. Leave you phone behind to be able to fully enjoy the surroundings. Observe the people, watch the horizon – whatever you like!

5. Volounteer

Many shelters need volunteers to help them run the place. Not only is this a good deed but it might also look great on a college application. Isn’t this a win-win situation?

6. Meet with your friends

You probably meet with them on a regular basis, but it’d be nice to put a twist on these meetings. Try going to new places, talking in another language, or playing truth or dare. It can be so much more fun than you think!

7. Visit the beach!

Or the local pool. It’s summer, and it’s time to get the tan you always wanted. You can combine this with the activities mentioned earlier in order to get the most out of your time there!

Whatever you choose to do, remember to have fun and make memories. Summer’s the time to do the things you never have time for during the school year, so don’t waste it in front of the screen!

Campus Stress: How Students Can Overcome The Pressure Cooker Of College

With ever-mounting pressure on today’s collegians to perform well academically, while signing on to a full slate of activities socially, stress has become a raging campus epidemic. The resulting anxiety can cause students to develop learning deficiencies, miss assignments, cut classes, underachieve, or drop out altogether.

And it hurts everyone: students, parents, faculty members, and universities. To help stressed out campus dwellers get their lives back under control, here are several student-centric stress-reducing strategies, excerpted from my new book “400 Ways to Stop Stress Now…and Forever!”

Work before play.

Leisure is better enjoyed when it follows a period of good hard work. But putting off work to have your fun first is another story. Rather than relieving stress, it can be a source of it. Because now you made a conscious decision to fall behind. And the prospect of neglected work to make up can erode your fun. Don’t let others lure you away from your appointed tasks, either. (Dereliction loves company.) Students are especially vulnerable to this. In the work/play cycle the effort should always come first, before the reward. Why make yourself crazy?

training program…overnight cramming and marathon study sessions are less productive and the material more easily forgotten. Never let it get to that point. Study as you go along—in shorter, more frequent intervals. It will keep the information fresh in your mind so you won’t waste time relearning it. Review sessions will be faster and less tedious—thus, less likely to be put off. And you

 

Don’t let others waste your time.

Some people have no stress empathy. They see that you’re totally crazed (or do they?), yet needlessly interrupt you, get in your way, engage you in small talk, and otherwise make a nuisance of themselves. These are often people you room with, or are close to, and don’t want to offend. Be polite, be diplomatic, but firmly convey the message you’re way too busy to schmooze. Seek commiseration: “Yo

 

u won’t believe how swamped I am.” Or look at your watch and exclaim: “Yikes! You’ll have to excuse me…” If these don’t work, simply ask them to help you with your work. That’s right. Ask for help. It will usually get rid of them, or even better, they just might pitch in. In any case, use your ingenuity and always have a good evasive tactic at the ready. Why make yourself crazy?

Don’t be driven to Internet distraction.

The Web can soak up precious time so insidiously you’re often not even aware of it. How easily a simple online task can end up taking an hour or more! Be smart. Devise your plan of attack before going on. And stick with it. Don’t be lured away by enticing links or allow yourself to drift about aimlessly. Log on, get what you want and get off. Make the Internet the efficient, timesaving tool it was meant to b

This should be automatic, but for many reasons, we’ll put off more important and pressing things to take care of lesser priorities first. Not only does it leave that bigger thing hanging over us, it often deprives us of the time and energy we’ll need to accomplish the important task. Every day, take a few moments to consider what project would make most sense to get out of the way first. Then meet it head on, without becoming sidetracked, without trying to squeeze something else in between. Then go on to the next most critical…and watch the stress ease away. Why make yourself crazy?
